We are waiting to move into a new house. It has an acre of very overgrown but once beautifully maintained garden. It's been more or less abandoned for 9 years though. It has a lovely river frontage and lots of room for veggie plots and there is a polytunnel and so on. Can't wait!
We went for a visit this week just so we could see what needs to be done in the garden and guage how much hard work we are taking on. I took lots of photos but couldn't decide what this tree was in the middle of the photo. Does anyone have any ideas please? I couldn't get close enough to get a really good look at the leaves. In terms of size I would say about 20 feet tall, the rhodedendron is almost tree size itself. Quick thought was bamboo but I don't think it is somehow.
Unless other closely-packed trees have been removed (which could force just about anything to grow long, thin, horizontal branches like that) I'd have to agree with GA - cedar.

The secret of life is to aim below the head (With thanks to MMM)
Thanks, I hadn't thought of that, interesting. It certainly looks stately enough doesn't it? Actually, although that's helpful, I think I was meaning a different tree. I'm looking at the one slap in the middle of the photo but down a little, below the potential cedar and levelish with the rhodedendron.
Willow it is then! I just couldn't be sure at all. I shall try to hack my way through to it when we get the keys and check it out. There are a lot of rogue saplings in there, mainly ash, beech, broom, hazel & sycamore. Some of them are going to have to go, there are paths and steps I can't even find in there at the moment.
We are desperate to get there because it REALLY needs some work, lots of wooden buildings needing preservative paint, weeds everywhere and enough pruning and chopping to keep the log burner going for months. We're even thinking of looking on HelpX to see if anyone would like a couple of weeks helping prepare some veg plots and clearing the river bank.
It's in Wales, MMM, not that far from Machynlleth. And for the first time in 10 years it will be our only home (assuming we can sell this one!) Can't wait to unpack all our stuff from storage and have everything we own in one place for once.
Sounds lovely - hadn't realised you'd managed to sell your other places so well done for doing so. It will be lovely to have all your things all together in one house now - bet you are soooooo looking forward to this move.
