Potentially dangerous territory, Giz. Lots of fungi are edible, but you have to be absolutely doubleplus sure that they're what you think they are, because there are also poisonous ones which look like edible ones. I don't collect wild fungi for precisely this reason - I'm just not experienced enough to go out on my own. You'd certainly need a very good field guide, and there are courses - accompanied foraging expeditions - which are well worth doing. Not sure about in London, though.

I'm sure the fun guys to be with will be here soon to give you better advice.

I'd say find someone who's familiar with the local fungi, and see if they can find the time to drag you along on a forage.

Last autumn I was on vacation in the Ardennes, and I brought a pretty decent fieldguide with me.
Once I was in the middle of mushroom central doubt rose...they look so much alike.
...And even like that one on page 57 with the skull and crossbones next to it.

When I returned to the cottage I noticed 4 Polish guys who where setting up what looked like a pickled mushroom industry on their picknick-table.
I knew I just had to have a chat with them so I politely walked up to them and asked ''Exuse me...English? ...Deutch?''

About one hour later I knew how to identify the common chep, had a scrap of paper with me with a recipe for pickled mushrooms,a bag full of cheps and was almost drunk stupid from the ''Slivovits'' they kept pouring.
:drunken:
