Hi from Catalunya
Hello, I've just found this forum (by accident) and thought I'd join as it looks interesting. Me and my husband live in Catalunya, NE Spain, having moved here four years ago. We initially lived in our finca, completely off-grid with solar/wind power and rain water for all our water needs, but we also bought a house in our local village a year ago and now live there. We go to the finca every day to tend to our vegetable garden, where we are more or less self-sufficient in potatoes, onions and carrots and also make enough tomato puree to last the year! I'm hoping to learn lots of new things from members of this site :-)

Hi there and welcome

Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

@MuddyWitch - 'Finca' means a farm buiolding (I think) in Spanish, but in Catalan we call it a 'Mas'... in other words a small dwelling in the countryside.

That's interesting as they are called Mas in Provence as well.... anyway hola and welcome
- oh at last, could you please tell me how to pronounce the Catalan for welcome, think it is benvinguts or something that looks a bit silly to me being English.
We were there briefly last spring and had a lovely time on the coast, particularly birdwatching all around Roses.

Hi Millymollymandy, I'll write 'benvinguts' phonetically to help you - 'benbingoots', because 'v' is usually a 'b' and the 'u' sound would be 'oo'. Hope that helps!Millymollymandy wrote:That's interesting as they are called Mas in Provence as well.... anyway hola and welcome- oh at last, could you please tell me how to pronounce the Catalan for welcome, think it is benvinguts or something that looks a bit silly to me being English.

¡ hola!. y bienvendo. desde Andalucia ( almeria)
the word FINCA.. actually just means property ( as in land or buildings)
However it is often used to refer to a country property, usually ( round these parts anyway) to a LARGE property and land together.
a country farn house type is a cortijo ( but that can vary from a 2 roomed shack, to a quite extensive large house ( think manor house ...........

Thank you so much - in fact actually after I asked you I googled and found a site where I could listen to it - not really that much different from how it looks, is it?jamjaragain wrote:Hi Millymollymandy, I'll write 'benvinguts' phonetically to help you - 'benbingoots', because 'v' is usually a 'b' and the 'u' sound would be 'oo'.
