Asian Banana plants?

Post: # 225290Post chuck_n_grace »

Hi,
Grace and I stopped to look at a house with a very busy garden, front and back lawns. The Thai lady was very friendly to us 'strangers'. She gave us lots of stuff from her garden (she was making room for four 4'x40' raised beds).

I received 9 portions of plants with roots. She says they grow every year...and at the end of the growing season they should be cut down. We found a sunny spot in the garden and planted them this afternoon.

Any of you have experience with banana trees? Plants? I don't think they are trees because they are cut down every year. Any thoughts/tips would be welcome.

Regards,
Chuck

Chuck,I worked at a nursery where we produced thousands of banana plants(grown in the uk,except in the far SW as a houseplant which, outside of Kew,won't set fruit). In the far SW they will survive outside, most winters, and make a substantial tree which although they look a bit manky after winter, are not herbacious ie.arent cut back.
HOWEVER.. there are loads and loads of the species (Musa) and you have probably got something completely different,so all this is irrelevant!

oldjerry,
When the things start to grow I'll post some pics if I haven't identified them yet. I do hope they produce fruit. =)

Regards,
Chuck
