remove the dead grass from my lawn?

The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.

I've recently bough a nice sit-on lawn mower and my newly cut grass looks lovely but there is lots of dead grass from years of negligence from the previous owner.
What is the best way to remove the dead grass? Should I burn it out (fire?) or to use a machine like dethatcher or a Chain Harrow? If the mechanical option is the best, which device is the best? Are any of them suitable for a 12 hp lawnmower? Can I make my own as they seem expensive ?
