Last minute sowing

Post: # 204745Post bonniethomas06 »

Hi,

I am scouring the veggie books to see what I can sow now for the winter - I have lost impetus with the veggie patch lately for lots of reasons - we have been away at weddings, days out and our lovely little moggy was run over :(

But now I am feeling calmer and ready for a second wind, I am worried that I have left it a bit late for overwinter/early spring crops.

At the weekend I plan to sow rainbow chard and swede - is there anything else I can sow now which will do its thing over winter - in particular I would like to squeeze in some savoy cabbage and some last chanterey carrots. Is it too late?

Thanks

I think anything sown now is on the late side and will certainly need lots fo TLC. You can also sow some winter salads, corn salad, mizuna, and some winter hardy lettuce. I also think there are some varieties of peas that you can sow now for a late crop. But anyway it won't be long before you can plant Japanese onion sets (could sow the seeds now), garlic, broad beans and winter peas. If you have some cover, you can sow a wider range of lettuce and winter salads, some brassicas, calabrese, cauliflowers for spring.

You could get some baby leeks and cabbagey things from a garden centre ready to plant out - it's the right time for planting out leeks now anyway. I'm still pathetically attempting to sow my winter kale as it just doesn't want to germinate and if it does it's already being attacked by caterpillars, flea beetles, slugs (? well something is eating them when they are only mm tall) and even my ducks stuck their beaks in a load of them so I am resigned to an almost curly kale free winter.
