Cost of Rabbit

Post: # 193445Post Touchwood »

We have our first litter of baby rabbits with the sole intention of providing some meat for ourselves. However we have been asked if we would sell some as apparently it's not easy to get hold of round here. I don't know that I want to go the route of selling it, but if we do have no idea what the going rate is and would be grateful for any suggestions. :dontknow:

We buy whole rabbits for £2.50 each from someone in our village. Our farm shop sells them for £3.50.

We can't buy rabbit in the shops around here, but I know from the past that wild rabbits in the butchers are generally very cheap - home farmed rabbit is dearer, but then the meat is whiter & softer - try & put some sort of figure on them based on the cost of feed & of course your time if you are processing.

If you are selling them as cute baby bunnies, then pitch the cost against the pet shops - you can't lose really!
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden

Same again £2.50 for wild rabbits in fur. Supermarkets at one time did sell packs of Chinese boneless rabbit for about the same price as horror-show chicken. Must be easier to catch the boneless rabbits, I can just imagine them flumping around

Thanks for all your input. They're NewZealand X so should get to a reasonable size.
I've been handling these a lot cos I didn't want them traumatised when handled for dispatch :( and unfortunately have made the mistake of getting too attached to them. Think I may try and sell these as pets and keep the next lot a bit more at arms length.

most of the butchers around here sell them (wild) for £4.50 thats why I refuse to sell to them as they only give me a quid I usually swap them for a guinness a rabbit in the pub
