Urgent help needed!

Post: # 192185Post JulieSherris »

OK, so I have little Leah staying for the weekend & at first she requested that we kill a chicken for tomorrow's dinner.
Then she changed her mind when she saw that we still had a turkey crown in the freezer.... so, turkey is duly defrosted & brined, I'm ready to pop it in & start the cooking... no foil!!

Can I use parchment paper instead? It appears that I have 3 rolls of that - will it protect the bird, or shall I have to wait & hit the village in the morning? (Bearing in mind that it's F1 day & Leah takes ages to get herself together in the mornings!)

Answers welcome asap....... I'm such an idiot!

What do you need foil for? Or is this one of those monster turkeys the likes of which we don't see here in France that goes in the oven for about 8 hours?

We never cover chicken or turkey and it never burns (if that is the reason) but we do put streaky bacon over it for the last half hour.

Do you have shops open in Ireland on Sundays, especially easter Sunday?

MMM, the last of the freezer turkeys was the one that I jointed, so it's just the crown, but my oven browns everything, so I always use foil for the turkeys - the chickens go in my enamel roaster that has a lid - this is a touch too large for that though.....

And as for the shops, well, this is bloody strange.... in the UK, Good Friday is a bank holiday, so shops follow sunday hours - come Easter Sunday & the shops are closed.... Here, the shops are open on the friday, but NO pubs or banks - and you can't buy alcohol anywhere on the friday either, so most restaurants close too....
But today after I checked, it seems that the local supermarket is open usual hours & if I drove to the nearest town, the shops are open as usual too - strange.... :dontknow:

Anyway, I used parchment paper & a slightly lower temperature, that seemed to work just fine

Yep! All pubs close on good friday & xmas day - no alcohol sales anywhere apart from airports & trains, apparently....

Mind, due to a rugby match in Limerick, it was decided that for the first time EVER, pubs in Limerick could open this year for limited hours... I bet rugby had a lot more 'fans' last friday!

Interesting isn't it, we don't have Good Friday here in France but they do in Switzerland (obviously it isn't called that).

Just looked at my English calendar and it says Easter Monday isn't a holiday in Scotland!!! Tis in France! Dunno about shops opening because I know from experience never ever go near a supermarket on the Friday or Saturday before Easter in France - blimey just cos the shops are shut for 2 days all these mad people are stocking up for a fortnight!

Anyway hope your turkey is nice; reading your post this morning made me realise it is actually Easter today so we are having a roast chook tonight and I'm going to make a pear clafouti, cos I can use 3 duck eggs up and another for the stuffing!
