Ducks

Post: # 180471Post happyigloo »

Just got out first ever ducks at the weekend! They are pretty cool. We got 2 Pekin ducks - 7 weeks old.

Now the only problem is that they are terrified off us. Is there anyway to win them round? Had heard marmite on toast.

I think they'll get used to us and them be come more comfortable but if anyone has a technique they could share that would be great.

Cheers

Time and patience.

I have a hen who is still so nervy after 6 months with us I still haven't even been able to touch her. The only time I've ever managed to touch my ducks in 3 years is when they are eating and I've managed to stroke two of them, but sometimes they just back off if I do that then they all get upset and run away.

You might be lucky as they are very young and I got all my birds at about 6 months ish (not sure for the ducks) so just spend time with them as much as possible so they get used to you, and try to get them to eat some food out of your hand.

Good luck!

Oh no! I had read Pekin are as loyal as dogs and make great pets!

Will see how it goes. Think you're right about feeding from the hand.

Definitely time and patience...had the same trouble with all of my birds, three of which I got when they were two years old! yes I know, I'm a soft touch however, my point is I can pick them all up every time now and they follow me about..keep at it :salute:

Cool will do. Only had them a few days now so I know I'm worrying too much. They do seem a bit calmer already.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
