Cuckoo!

Post: # 16121Post Millymollymandy »

Heard my first cuckoo this morning, and this afternoon as I was digging four swallows appeared swooping over my garden!! So I am one happy bunny because spring has officially sprung! :flower:

No cuckoos yet, but earlier this week I saw the first peewit, and today a few house martins flew overhead - and the finches sound very much like spring! The sparrows in the shed are taking all the stuffing out of the walls (well, insulation), which looks pretty awful, but probably provides them with first class nests!
Still waiting for the first daffodil, though. This is an area where daffs are grown commercially; normally the fields should be yellow by now!

No cuckoo here either - but lots of oyster catchers and lapwings... no daffydowndillies here yet either, although they are in bud so it shouldn't be long. We haven't got many though so have made a note that we need to remedy this next year. I LOVE spring bulbs.

Ohhhh and we have pussy willow - was great to show it to Jonathan who was very intrigued by it.

I think we have just about got 7 C here today :flower:

Ina/Shirlz - do you get the Lapwings in summer in Scotland? We have them in the winter!

Daffies flowering here, and forsythia, mimosa, apricot, an ornamental cherry is starting, euphorbias starting into bloom. And the grass and weeds are growing at an alarming rate. All has happened really in the last 10 days when the temps finally rose. Woosh!

Hi M3

I think they are here all year round... but they come inland to breed in the spring....

The sound they make is wonderful... and together with the oystercatchers and curlews... it really warms my heart.

Two nights ago I saw a Tawny Owl close to the house silhouetted against the light in the west just before dark.

Then last night heard a familiar sound - it was a NIGHTINGALE  in a tree right by the house at dusk - could see it singing! If anyone watched the wildlife prog on Friday before Gardeners World you will have heard it's very strange sound that it makes. It is a myth that it has a beautiful song! Anyway I was amazed because I've never seen or heard one in any of my gardens, until now!

No need for nightingales here - the streetlights keep some birds going all night sometimes. When do they sleep?

I don't think the birds get much sleep round here -certainly not the gulls anyway.
