Can you use garden rosehips to make syrup with???

I'd only go for red ones tho' (I've never tried using green ones but I can't imagine that they make very good syrup).

I was sure they were ok I didn't want to say yes to a friend and make her ill. I agree they should be red. I would still prefer to gather wild roses as i feel its ... right .... the act of getting out somewhere under blue skies with buzzards soaring... much better than nipping into the neighbours garden

yes you can, and its relly tasty, I've made several different batches over the years - best to use the hedge/wild type of rose bush which make the sweetest, scentiest syryp. Those bulbus type (I think from 'rosa rugosa') are not so good bt they look great. Always discard the seeds, basically boil the shells strain and disolve loads of sugar to make a syrup - there are many receipies on the net. Good Luck. - also keeps for months if sealed in steralised bottles.

I use them, and its always worked out well. I boil the whole lot together, then pass through a sieve.

I normally wait until they have had a frost on them, do other peoiple bother with this?

Please excuse my ignorance but does straining get rid of all the fine hairs, what type of strainer is best to use. I've often fancied having a go but shied away from scraping away at the opened hips.

I have not had a problem with it, we have also given lots away in Christmas hampers etc. The only negative comments that have been made, is that it is too sweet . I have made loads, we normally get about 6kg of hips and thats with leaving quite a lot on the bushes. I was told that the birds eat them, but I have never seen them!

I use a jelly bag for straining and never had problem...

this post had me going out today to collect hips from the hedgrow,only to find the hedgerow had gone the farmers had been out cutting the hedges and all the wild roses are cut down to nothing,so sad,still i have roses in the garden and didnt realise i could use them,

I found our farmer was doing the same thing here this morning Shell. Got me quite depressed about the all the hips/haws and berries I'd planned to pick until I discovered that he'd also been spraying the field so maybe it was a silver lining after all...

Fortunately there are lots of other unsullied places around here to forage safely.
