Online map of wild food locations!

Post: # 170036Post wildandedible.com »

Hi There,

I've just created an online mapping application to map locations of wild food. The site provides the facility for users to signup, log locations, upload images and verify others locations.

My motifs are purely based on trying to stop the wastage of wild food. All summer I have been travelling to work with masses of fruit such as plums and apples going to waste - rotting on the side of the road. As a gis developer i thought it would be cool to try and map out the locations of wild food for everyone to collaborate on! - Please sign up and help contribute today!

Please note the site is still in its infancy.. I'm sure it could be developed a lot further and providing it is used i will devote the time to improving it - please contact me with any suggestions you may have! All feedback would be gratefully received.

Thanks for reading

This sounds familiar, John. Can you tell me if you used DX Studio (or Unity???) to develop it?

Mike

EDIT: I knew it looked familiar! Well spotted , MMM (below) - the only place I didn't search was this site!

I've also taken the 'please read' in capitals out otherwise it looks like something that has been written by Admin.

It might be worth the two of you developers having a chat and seeing if there is any scope for combining ideas. If you have quite different approaches then there is certainly room for working independently but working together might reach the critical mass of contributions more quickly.

If nothing else, you could agree on an API so that finds could be indicated on each other's maps.

I tried to sign up for both but didn't have room for my surname on foragable and got an error (Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ';' in /home/.orit/baptist/wildandedible.com/pages/signup.php on line 14) trying to sign up for wildandedible.

BTW, is it planned to have a twitter account for wildandedible? I see you have a twitter badge at the top of the page but it just links to the main site.

Am I the only one who feels a little queasy about this.

I know I'm one of life's worriers but I envisage the countryside being stripped bare, by marauding hoards  .

Naaaah! If you showed most people a bush in the hedgerow which grew money, they wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Far, far beneath their dignity.
On the other hand, I'm keeping mum about my one and only sloe site.

I'm a bit late to this conversation, but I thought I would plug a wild food map I have been working on with a couple of friends:

http://forage.rs

Plants added to the map are linked to a database of edible and useful plants, so in the near future you will be able to browse the map according to what is in season, what is most edible/medicinal, plants with particular uses, etc... You can also embed the map in your own website if you want to use it on your homepage.

I hope somebody finds this useful...
