Cyclone Larry in AUS

Post: # 15049Post Shelle »

QLD has been hit by a category 5 cyclone making it the biggest cyclone to hit a populated area of Australia ever - and another is on its way ...

i have been keeping track through personal accounts on this thread (please take note i think i have to put a language warning in for this one - just in case).

Excuse my ignorance but is a cyclone the same as a hurricane, or is it more of a tornado?

Lets hope greengirl is ok. It anyone else from that neck of the woods?

Cyclone Larry

I'm in Brisbane, and have in-laws up in Townsville. Thank God nobody was killed, and the number of injuries at this point is very low (20 to 40 in Innisfail, the township of 5000 nearest the centre of the cyclone).

Two days after the cyclone left, the Courier-Mail (main tabloid) ran a story complete with pictures of crying kids about how slack the govt. was because people were being forced to wait in the rain for five hours ... to get bottled water. Television footage soon followed of people complaining that the re-opened grocery stores had sold out of basics.

This is a region regularly hit by cyclones, with warnings broadcast regularly on television and radio for days beforehand that a cyclone was coming, stock up on food and water. A category 5 cyclone hits the area, nobody gets killed, and people are complaining about emergency response! Grrr... Funnily enough, very little attention was paid to the people who were adequately prepared, and who were quietly going about cleaning up their property.

BTW, around here the word hurricane is generally understood as American for cyclone.

Glad all is ok with your family Kfish ... and it was great news to hear no body was killed and injuries were low.

Have never been through anything like a cyclone myself but even though a cyclone would be a scary thing to experience it must also be an amazing thing to witness.

Glad the second one stayed out to sea
I am happy to have a space to grow once again :)

I have, but I was very young so don't remember much. I was born in Fiji where hurricanes are quite frequent. I do have memories of sitting on the shoulders of a Fijian guy going through waist deep water up to the hotel at the top of the hill when our farm was flooded out. Don't remember being scared though!
