We've finished the polytunnel!

Post: # 154139Post Masco&Bongo »

OK, so OH 'made' most of it, as I'm a bit feeble when it comes to powertools, etc, but I did a lot of gofering, and holding and fetching and did eventually hammer some nails into the base rails!!

It has taken us several weeks, due to weather, the fact we have full time jobs, missing parts etc, but we finished it yesterday! We covered it despite there being winds between 12-20 mph (which is a strict no-no in any polytunnel book!), as we'd seen the forecasts for the next few weeks and that seemed the least wind we could hope for!

Image

It's 10ft wide by 30ft long, and has timber base rails instead of being trenched.

If you can spot by the double doors, a huge puddle of water.... just as we were finishing the last end, we had 30 minutes of torrential rain, which drenched us and the dogs, and we spent 30 minutes in the tunnel making a makeshift poncho and hat for me out of cut-offs of polythene. There will be no pictures of this.

I haven't put anything in it yet, as we've got irrigation systems and groundcover to put in, although I'll be moving stuff in this week.

You did a great job!
The base rails will make life a lot easier when it comes to replacing the cover..no digging
If there`s any slope to the rails you could fit guttering and bury a couple of water butts to collect the water

Thanks!! The base rails are there for that exact reason (and to help us tension it properly!!)

I've been thinking about guttering, but not sure how I'd go about fixing it to the tunnel... that'll be another project for OH then!!

You can get PT guttering, it is a self adhesive strip that sticks onto the plastic and has a wee tube at the end to stick into a butt.

Your tunnel looks fab, :thumbright: good luck filling it. Ours is still more than half empty, after 2 months, just haven't planted enough stuff for it (or the seedlings have dropped down dead)

Anyway, you will wonder what you ever did without one for sure :flower:

Ground level gutters would be the easiest but you`d have to bury at least one waterbutt. I`ll have similar issues, mine will be around 18" off the ground and needs to be curved

Have you concreted it in or used some of those fancy ground anchors to stop it blowing away?

Yay! Looks wonderful - well done!

Oh, I totally love our polyhouse - but there's something quite perverse when you're stood inside watering the beds when it's absolutely tipping it down & flooding outside!!
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden

We've got the anchor plates for it... which was a b!tch of a job! 14 holes, 40cm deep and 40cm square.... and then you put the plates and tubes in, and just fill them in again!

Cos we're so windy generally, I didn't trust trenching it in to keep it on the ground!

Its no fun digging a hole just to fill it in again
I dug 160 ft3 of heavy clay out from my greenhouse floor and then put most of it back in again.
Its not a job you want to do more than once

You have done a very nice job, it looks like a really nice polytunnel. I wish that would be in my garden

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.
