Funny, didn't even think of St. David's when I planned my tea for tonight - but it happens to be leek! With couscous, which is not so very Welsh. And I love Caerphilly, too...

Anyway, happy St. David's day to all of you.

Even if you don't have a recipe - can you please explain what Cawl and Welsh cakes are?

Cawl is like a broth/stew (cooked in a cauldron I think is where it get's name from)

Welsh cakes - currants in pastry - i guess a bit like an eccles cake - do you know what they are Ina?

No the Welsh cakes are sultanas in a really soft cakey mixture, cooked on a griddle - floury and absolutely delish. (My mother and I both agreed not to make any this year as they defy not eating all of them straight away). Sue

I must have had the pseudo-welsh cakes then made by a man from Eccles who lives in Wales hahahaha

There are some pseudo Eccles cakes in the shops that are just puff pastry with sugar on top and a few currants inside... I like the "proper" Eccles cakes, and the Welsh cakes sound lovely, too!

MMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yummy!!

I rather like the recipe for the 'welsh way with lamb' (now that opens the door for some smutty comments doesn't it.... but wow - honey, ginger, rosemary and cider, I'm going to have to try this recipe.

I take issue with her recipe for Cranachan though - in the Scottish section. The beauty of cranachan (and I'll post the recipe in the food folder) is that everyone helps themselves to whatever fruit is in season, toasted oatmeal, crowdie and cream, and a tot of whisky over the top!! A simple pud for a friendly gathering of folk using fresh seasonal ingredients.
