Mouldy soil

Post: # 151239Post Jinwin »

Hi,

I'm growing some herbs in pots on my windowsill and I noticed that the rosemary and the thyme have got a faint fuzz of white mouldy looking stuff on the surface of the soil. Does anyone know what this is? Is it good or bad? Am I watering them too much? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question! I'd appreciate any help on this - thanks a lot!

Yup, mould tends to grow when it is warm, shady and damp - I find that with indoor plants watering in the pot rather than the soil helps. also, maybe try to increase ventilation, or even think about moving them outside (rosemary and thyme will be fine outside)

I don't know what it is but I've noticed it occasionally on the compost round potted plants. I think it's probably caused by the conditions - warm, moist - perfect for mould.

I don't think it'll do you or the herbs any harm, but you could try putting them outside during the day for a while, see if that helps.

If you're really worried about it you can always change the soil - dig'em up shake off any soil round the roots and re-pot them in new compost in a fresh pot.

Thanks for the help and setting my mind at rest. They're now sitting on the outside windowsill.

Bring them in at night though - Just to make sure the frost doesn't give them a shock. After a week or so you can leave them out over night, if you want.
