I sometimes worry that Katie isn't getting enough out of our trips to the allotment, but yesterday confirmed that it's really a very special day out for her.

Lovely learning day
Yesterday I took Katie to the allotment. On the way we passed some tulips growing on the verge and Katie asked to stop and look at them. Although the flowers had been open the last time we went past, they were closed this time and she wanted to know why. I explained in simple terms and pointed out daisies and dandelions that were also closed along the way. Then we found an empty bird egg shell which prompted further discussion, especially when I pointed out the bird nest in the tree immediately above. We (finally) got to the allotment, and one of my jobs was to move a compost heap into the new 'bin' that Richard had made for me with old pallets and wood. Lots of worms, woodlice, millipedes and slugs to look at. Then, as I pulled the tarpaulin back further to get to the rest of the heap, a little frog hopped out!

Awww, sounds lovely!
I love it when the little ones learn new things - Leah told me yesterday that frogs weren't animals at all - they were (deep concentrated face here) "Amp-fib-eeons" So they can live in water and out of it - and even "Fyoomans" can't do that!!
When I asked where she learnt that, she said it was on boomerang TV while mummy was still in bed
Who says TV's bad for kids - actually, the more impressive point here is that she knows & remembers all the sky codes for the kids channels

The more people I meet, the more I like my garden
