Planting onions in spring

Post: # 150211Post MrsD'ville mkII »

Hello. We planted onions and garlic in the autumn as you do, but I thought you could also plant in spring. Veg patch is now (mostly) nicely rotorvated and I was going to put the leftover onions in, but the packet only shows planting in the autumn. Would there be no chance of them growing if they went in now? I don't like to waste them but I don't want to stick them in if they're going to take up space without producing anything, esp as we're growing partly to save on the grocery bill so really want to make every inch count (as far as you can ever be sure things will grow!).

Thanks. Oh btw they're Radar Yellow. Will go and google but also interested in 'real' advice. Thanks.

Rather than waste them plant them - I don't know the difference between autumn and spring (the season - not spring onion!) onion sets but I can't see any reason why they shouldn't still grow like spring onion sets do.

Yes, Radar are a type for autumn planting, but if you have sets rather than seeds I'd just get them in the plot right away. You won't be able to keep them until autumn, I think. You might end up with smaller onions than if you'd planted in autumn, but I expect you'll get a harvest off them.

Good luck! Jandra

Great, thanks. I'd gleaned from Googling that you need specific varieties for planting in spring but a small onion is better than no onion.
