Green house Crisis!!

Post: # 149968Post rach1900 »

Hi all...

we have a little nipper in the greenhouse! Every time we plant some seeds (especially big juicy ones like runner beans!) they get dug up and nibbled... Frequently the ones that do get through then get nibbled once they've sprouted...

It is soul destroying when I get in and check to find that rows and rows of seedlings have been uprooted...

Any ideas what it could be? We were originally working on the theory that it was mice, so put the trays on metal staging that's hard to climb up and any others on upturned flower pots like mini dutch barns... But i've just arrived in to check and found all my veg spagetti uprooted. Our greenhouse has one or two holes in, and is placed quite near where we normally put out bird food... is it more likely to be birds? If so - any ideas of how to combat them!!!!

Thanks!! Rachel

Melt some lard/fat in a shallow tray or an old frying pan and let it solidify. Place a plant pot with a juicy seedling in the middle as bait. Whatever it is will leave footprints in the fat..you`ll then have to figure out what they belong to

That's clever Colin! The only thing I can suggest is to try to plug the gaps though mice can squeeze through small spaces.

sounds like mice to me. last year we had one the gh - i found out why my sweetcorn were not germinating... they were not there! - then i realised the trays had been dug out

we put a snappy trap down, and found him the next day. instant death. Either him or our food. you could use one of those live kill ones if you want to see what it is/release it
