How long can I keep chickpeas?

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

How long can I keep chickpeas?

Post: # 146322Post Uller »

I want to use dried chickpeas rather than tinned, but I don't want to be soaking and boiling for hours every time I want to use them.

If I cook a big batch at the weekend, can I keep them in the fridge? If so, how long for? Do I need to do anything special with them - cover in liquid etc?

I'd say the limit is about a week in the fridge, better to box them and freeze them, that way they will stay fresh for several months :)

I thoroughly cook mine and freeze them, then they don't need a long cook when they come out of the freezer, you can just add them to whatever it is and heat through!

Like the other entries I cook a whole bagful at a time (in the pressure cooker), portion them and freeze.
