off grid internet connections

Post: # 142089Post caithnesscrofter »

currently, i use a nokia 6120c for my internet connection and the t-mobile flext plan. 85% of my surfing is done on my phone and the other 15% on my computer wired to my phone using it as the modem mostly for uploading and emailling/typing. It is slow, yes, the nearest 3g is 120 miles away so on gprs but, this im used to now! I'm due for a phone upgrade and wonder if anyone can suggest a good phone for my situation? I mainly care about battery life as i have little power here and is very weather dependant. Also, want a phone with a qwerty keyboard of any type. So far, reviews of the google phone are not good concerning battery. The new nokia n97 looks ideal but, wont be out til after my upgrade. So, nokia 5800 looks good anyone have one? How about the blackberry?

Sorry can't help about Blackberry but just an observation which is probably not relevant.
We have microwave broadband from a transmitter on a local mountain top. It used to be VERY unreliable and prone to stop working every time I had a bid on something on Ebay :angryfire:
I decided to get my mobile phone working as a modem as a backup and found if I wanted to use my Motorola I needed to buy the software at over £100 !!
I changed to a Nokia which has free downloadable modem software and because of that I don't think I will ever even consider a Motorola again.

Disclaimer: I almost certainly haven't a clue what I'm talking about.

tony, on that note. You dont really need the software for getting on the internet with a moby just the settings. I run linux and linux only and the nokia software is not compatible. For linux you get the app gnome ppp. Put in the correct settings and your away. These settings for every network are readily available. T-mobile in the uk settings are:

Dialing number: *99***#
Username: wapuser
Password: wap

When you connect your phone choose pc suite on the phone.
