planters on shed roofs

Post: # 138638Post moocher »

i have a homemade shed in corner of the garden the roof has a slight slant and its made from couragated [sp] asbestos type roofing sheets, the grey ones that split when dropped.
i was wondering about some small planters on the top with herbs in,i will drill drainage holes in them, and i can reach the roof with the swimming pool ladder thats always next to it so wont forget to water them, lol
do you think it will be a success.

Sounds like a good idea, provided the roof is strong enough to take the weight and it wouldn't be too windy / exposed up there.
With the amount of weeds and moss that seem to grow on my shed roof naturally, I guess they must get enough water & sunlight. :)

I'm going to have a go with hanging basket type tomatoes due to a lack of proper growing space, I don't know if anyone has had any sucess with these at all?

If the roofcovering really is asbestos, I'd keep well away (!) from it. It's fine as long as you don't touch it, but if you start scraping containers over it you can release fibers which can cause havoc with your body. Google for "health risks asbestos" if you want to find out more.

good point there is an old dining table top on the roof to help stop the wind getting under the sheets and blowing off so could put couple on there.

I did a lot of herbs , tomatoes and cucumber on the garage roof last year they all did really well but dried out very, very quickly so need to keep an eye on them

I grow tumbling tom most years, we love 'em. My baskets are on a South facing conservatory so I water twice on most days & feed 2-3 times a week with comfrey tea.

We never count how many we get but its loads, we just pick & eat (often when watering! ). They are very sweet and mouth-sized.
