Greetings from Sheffield
Greetings from Sheffield
Hello,
My name is Clare, but friends call me Clazbear. I live in Sheffield with my husband and two, soon to be 3, kids. I would like to tell you about myself and why I am here, and i appologise now if I go on a bit.
I found this site and forum whilst google-ing the phrase self-sufficiency, it was top of the list, I clicked, I was impressed with the site content and here I am.
I hope to make friends with like minded people and get advice on becoming more self sufficient.
We are by no means SS yet. I have always, (since my teens anyway), been "green", but only small scale. Recently though with the current financial climate as it is, we have started cutting back, finding alternatives and now want that SS life.
The dream is to move to the Cornish Countryside, a nice farmhouse or cottage with a couple acres of land, not to far from the coast. But that's a dream that requires money which we don't have. So for the time being we want to be Self-Sufficientish.
My daughter suffers from life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). So I have had to become a good cook, it's all from scratch, no pre-packaged for us. So our first step is to grow our own veg and fruits, because shop bought organics are still way to expensive in my view.
I am also learning to knit and sew, so I can make more of our own clothes. I have a flare for arts and crafts and think it should be an easy step to turn what talent I have to other more productive crafts.
I will leave it there, enough wafflle.
Blessed Be
Clazbear xx

Re: Greetings from Sheffield
Hello!
I'm new to this site too, only joined 2 days ago! It's amazingly useful to go through some of the old forum posts as they are full of hints and information that you may not have come across before - until now, I had thought I was quite well informed, but I realise that there are complete areas that I know nothing about!
I hope you eventually realise your dream of a home and a bit of land in Cornwall.
Hubby and I moved from Luton to West Cumbria in March (he's originally from up here) and managed to find a little house we could afford as it needs quite a bit doing to it - currently we're preparing to insulate the loft which is where all the heat seems to be going to, and have made insulation strips for the doors with rolled up newspapers (so sophisticated!) as there are gales howling under them since we won't be putting carpets down til we finish doing up the house!
We do have the prospect of a nice sized garden once we've put up decent fencing and built a shed/workshop. It will be dedicated to veg and, having cleared the jungle, is currently resting under black membrane as I've run out of energy to dig it over!
I hope you get a lot out of this site. As I say, I've only been visiting for a couple of days myself, but it has already changed my life for the better!

Re: Greetings from Sheffield
Thanks to all for the warm welcome
To Mamos, The Clan and I would love to be anywhere on the Lizard, preferably towards Mullion or in the Penwith area down towards Lands End up towards St Ives. I first visited Cornwall when I was 10 ( I'm now 31). But I fell in love with the place when we stayed down on the Lizard for the first time when I was 15. A magical holliday to remember, stopping off on the way to visit Stonehenge, then spending most of the fortnight visiting Cornish stone circles and walking the coast. Been down every year since, includuing the honeymoon, except this year due to illness and lack of coinage
I know a few people, from another forum I'm a member of, who live in Cornwall and I'm not at all gealous
Blessed Be
