Was just reading up on this actually, the soil needs to be 7c for at least a week before planting. However, the theory goes that a poly tunnel will give an extra month either side of the growing season.

You can get away with parsnips going in now I am sure there are some others that I can't think of at the moment.

I would try broad beans, early carrots, leaf greens like Mizuna, early cabbages, onions (especially spring onions), radishes, potatoes (maybe in pots?). If I get my ruddy coldframes up, I'll sow most of these a.s.a.p.

I have some interesting 'Lemon Drop' chillies from the Real Seed Company, which I'm keen to set away-I might chance a few this weekend(apparently they take 2-3 weeks to germinate).
I usually start them off in the airing cupboard, checking twice a day for any signs of emerging life.
As soon as I see anything, they are out onto a sunny windowsill to prevent any leggy growth.
This method worked well for my Tomatoes last year-they were quite strong, stocky plants by the time I took them down to my unheated greenhouse on the allotment, once it was warm enough.
I've just set out my Potatoes to chit today,in that most natural environment for them - that's right,on top of the wardrobe!
I live in a shoebox of a flat,so space, esp. windowsill space is at a premium!
A friend still laughs about the time that he called round to find three Apple trees in my BATHROOM,prior to them being taken down to the allotment!
Anyway-back to the Potatoes-this year I'm trying first early 'Winston' and second early 'Kestrel'.

We started growing in a tiny one bedroom flat as well. - you could not move for plants in march. It is amazing where you find space for everything, although it is nice to have stuff living around, but more space would have been nice though. In fact it was one of the reasons we moved to a cheaper area, so that we could get a house and grow more.

I haven't even ordered my seeds yet and I'm still digging over the potato patch, when the soil defrosts. Our temps are minus 4 or 5C at night. We've had one day where it reached +9C but since about Xmas it has been extremely cold. :(

In addition to the 10 varieties of chili peppers that I've got already on the go I have planted some flat-leaf parsley, thyme, tarragon, dill, mint, chives, sweet peppers and tomatoes, much of which has already germinated.
Since my plan to fetch seaweed from the beach today has been thwarted by the weather, I'll be attempting to make seedling pots from newspaper in a little while.
