A new newbie!

Post: # 131100Post grubbysoles »

Good morning all, from Sunny Sevenoaks!

I'd not heard of selfsufficientish until a friend of mine bought me the book for my birthday - I've had my face in it ever since. We live in a maisonette in Sevenoaks and, therefore, have no money! Hence one of the main needs for a bit of self-sufficiency, although I like the idea of saving this poor ol' planet, too. This summer I did my first ever veggie patch; mixed results, but if I ever become technically competent, I'll post a photo of my 929g giant parsnip!

On the waiting list for some hens from BHWT, but they're taking ages to arrive. Actually, I've recently become pregnant and am feeling proper sick and tired, so might need to wait for littl'un to pop out before I take on chickens as well, what with having a 2 year old on my hands, too. And 3 jobs. And a cat.

Oh, and my boyfriend thinks I'm losing my mind. I've told him today that he has to start weeing in the compost bins. This is the morning after I cooked his beef casserole in a hay-box oven. My kitchen smells like a rabbit hutch, but all good fun!!

Morning Emma - welcome to Ish!

I used to love Sevenoaks when I was a Kent dweller - have fond memories of being stampeded by a stag in Knole park when my eldest was buggy-bound... I ran, leaving said baby in buggy to her fate...... Ex-hubby did battle with the stag though & apart from twisting his ankle, no-one suffered - except my ribs where I was laughing so hard

Is the Oast House at Otford/Eynsford still going? Used to be my fave place to eat - mmmm......

Good luck with the compost wee... I hope it's not overlooked - your neighbours might get a bit of a shock when opening their curtains

Hello, and welcome to Ish!

What a fab friend that must be to buy you 'The Bible' - is she/he a member of the forum too?

Congrats on the pregnancy - oh, and if your bf is a bit self conscious about peeing in the compost he could always do it in the privacy of your bathroom and take a jug out to the compost!

Shucks, what a friendly bunch!

Julie - not sure about the Oast placey, I've never eaten there (even though I've lived in 7oaks for 20 years, on and off...), but I have had a few run-ins with stags in Knole Park. I've never abandoned my child to one of them, though, so you beat me there!! Although I've thought about it a few times...

I've not hit the ginger nuts yet, Green - I seem to be just giving in to all sorts of strange combinations at the moment, but hopefully I'll get to the end of the sicky bit soon and return to something a bit like normality.

Shirley, my friend who bought me the book is, alas, not a member/follower of ish at all, but I'm working on her!! She's a bit more 'trips to the spa in high heels', whereas I'm a bit more 'trips to the compost bin in wellies'. My gift to her at her recent housewarming was a box of veg out of the garden. It felt very nice to give someone some of my first ever crops!

And Ina, I came up with 'grubbysoles' when I went through a barefoot phase a few years back. The soles of my feet were constantly black with dirt! I would still be in that phase but for too much concrete and broken glass everywhere. No stopping me in the garden, though....

You should swap shoes... I'm sure she'd be ok in the wellies... and the heels could aerate the garden as you walk to the compost!

When were you in Bath? (Just read your competition tip and am still chuckling to myself) - I used to live near Bath and had to travel in every day to take my son to school. That was about 6 years ago now though.

Ah yes, the train incident in Bath... I lived in my little bedsit for about 6 months in 2002. Wells Road (urm, very near the train station!) is about the only bit of Bath that is dangerous and violent, and I decided not to sign up for another 6 months rent when the lad who lived upstairs from me got beaten up on our doorstep  There was blood all over the front door, and hand-prints in blood up the stairs where he had crawled up to his room afterwards. So I splashed out and rented a room in a nice house on Brook Road, near Oldfield Park, instead. One of the lads who lived there was very into growing his own veg and stuff. At the time I thought he was a nutter, but we'd probably get on quite well now! Left Bath for good in early 2004 - my enormous student debt meant I had no choice but to move back in with my folks. Bath is a lovely city, if you're rich.
