Overwintering beetroot?

Post: # 10206Post ina »

I actually managed to set foot in my little veggie plot today - mainly to put some muck on the rhubarb - and while rummaging around I found a small beetroot. Looks perfectly good to me - they were very small last autumn, so I hadn't pulled them all up. Now there are a few more in the ground; question is - do I leave them in until spring, in the hope they might gain in size, or do I count my blessings and pull them out while the going is good, i.e. the ground is temporarily not as hard as rock?

Absolutely NO IDEA Ina  but thought I would take the opportunity to tell you that I made a scrummy beetroot curry with the beetroot we bought at Banchory.

We want to grow beetroot this year - which variety did you grow?

I would be tempted to pull them out and eat them. When I have left beetroot they have not seemed to grow in size at all. They have gone to seed as they are a byannual the second year being the seed producing year. So I guess if you want to save money on seeds then leave them.

I thought they might go to seed - well, I'll pop into the garden tonight and pull them out before it gets cold again. They didn't do too great, so I'd rather not keep their seeds.

I've just ordered two different varieties for this year - one for summer eating, supposed to be nice raw, and the other one with good storage qualities. Can't remember the names just now, I'll have to look it up.
