pumpkins and frost

Post: # 129080Post Clara »

Will pumpkins survive snow/frost?

I've got a few that aren't quite ready and apparently the temperature is nosediving next week (possibly min of 4), don't know if we'll actually have a frost but apparently we have a 50/50 chance of snow on wednesday  , in any case it won't be much. What do you think I should do?

I don't think snow will bother them but if you've got a bit of straw or something to put round them it will help protect them from the frost.
I think the main problem is the sudden drop in temp, not a slow steady fall, or even going to a really low temp.

depends how harsh a frost. - usually they will survive the first one, but then the plant will die and you will have a load of soggy leavs with pumpkins sitting amongst them!
infact sometimes this is the only way to find them all!
we had a frost the other day and picked our pumpkins and squashes. they are not completely ripe, but last year I ripened one from dark green to orange in a cool sunny window
these are mine, now sititng in front of the french doors
