Orientals Anyone?

I've been growing some great long white roots this year, not parsnips or even fancy carrots but Oriental Radishes.
Raphanus sativus niger is it's latin name and it apparently comes in a lot of different forms but I only know the long white ones.
Thinly sliced, they are good in a salad or mixed sandwich but other than that I don't have any recipes but a google search hints at soup!

As the Latin name, Raphanus sativus niger is a black variety (and round by the looks of it), so what you have is probably not the niger variety. Is it daikon?

Daikon is very good stewed with pork and butter, or pork and soy sauce. It also goes well in pot au feu, adding a lot of bulk and also a good flavour.

If you have grilled fish sometimes, they're also good grated, drained if they're very moist, and placed in a lump beside the fish with a dash of soy sauce on. Then when you pick the fish off the bone, you take a nip of the daikon with it and it complements the fish very nicely.

Daikon is a staple food in Japan.

I didnt have any luck with my daikon this year, they soon bolted.

Yup, looks like daikon!
Looked at some recipes too, so I may finally have a justifiable reason for growing so much lol.
Tempted to try the black/niger variety too now. Thanks!

Well, the slugs really enjoyed my Pak Choi.

Yes my pak choi barely saw the light of day before it was munched, and they were so very big and healthy last year I was gutted.

Mind I have found slugs this year I didn't even realise it was posible for them to grow that big
