Help whats happened to my toms?

Post: # 123956Post mew »

Hi all

Been on holiday this week to St Ives and when I got back I went to check on my toms in the greenhouse which my neighbour has been looking after. Ive got loads and loads of fruit on them some of which are now turning red but i was gutted to find that the skins are all starting to go dry and rough is perhaps the best way I can explain it and a one or two have split.

Its only my second attempt at growing toms. Last year I lost the lot to bacterial leaf spot so this year I have been so, so careful in looking after them, pinching them out, supporting them correctly (something I overlooked last year.... oops and came home a few times to drunken plants), shading them from too much direct sunlight, watering properly (and only from the base not on the leaves, using tap water even just to make sure no bugs were carried over), feeding them at the correct times with some organic tom feed, making sure they dont dry out or even over water them and still it looks like im going to lose the lot. Its just sole destroying :0(.

Can anyone help and let me know whats happening and where Ive gone off course and if its something I can once again learn from and try and make sure it doesnt happen again next year. Im determined to get a crop at some point.

Thanks

MEW x

Perhaps your neighbour was'nt as conscientious as you would be in the watering department?

Yep, over watering makes them split.
Maybe your neighbour was a bit keen with the watering can (though I dare say they didn't know this!)
You can still eat the split ones, as long as they've not gone rotten, which they will do quite quickly.
