Um, I think they probably are birds eggs
When they start laying you can get some really tiny eggs, about as big as a blackbird's egg, but they soon settle down to laying normal sized eggs.
The first few weeks the 'normal' sized eggs are still a bit on the small side, after about 2 months they should be what you would call 'normal'
Also while they are settling down you might well get a huge egg now and again ... a double yolker, very nice to have boiled with soldiers
