Don't know what happened, but now there seem to be quite a few new members who are posting a lot which is great. Quite often they just registered and you never heard from them again. When Andy was away there were days when there wasn't a single new post in a 24 hour period!
So cheers to the new(ish) members who are really joining in, and thanks to Andy being back, there is new life in the forum and it a lot of fun again!!
I reckon it is a record!! But remember, you have to keep us in the manner to which we have been accustomed so that means you've got to carry on posting lots and lots
The only problem is - every time I switch on, there's so many new posts that I can hardly keep up! And I'd HATE to miss anything.... So it's getting later and later, and if I fall asleep at work it's ALL YOUR FAULT!!!
I think it's partly the fact that the site is working really well at the moment. There were days when I gave up in desperation because it took about 10 minutes for each post to go through! So thanks to Andy (and any helpers he might have had) for fixing it. And of course for starting a few new things, too.
Just in case I've missed something obvious, how do people work a forum like this? Are there any tricks I haven't found yet to make it easy to open a load of messages all at once?
On the days when there are 20 or so posts, it can be something of a chore to keep going back and forth to the index page to open another message.
Most of my internet forum life has been spent on usenet or email lists, where the client makes it easy to just click through the new messages, and even ignore threads or posters that you don't want to see. This is important on usenet, where some newsgroups can get hundreds of posts a day.
This is really the first web based forum I've used; it's OK for small numbers of messages, but if it's going to become more popular is there an easier way to navigate through them?
Stew - there is a thing called 'view posts since last visit' at the top right hand side of the main index - that will show you a list of all the topics that have been replied to or started since your last visit. That way you can just ignore anything that doesn't appeal and you don't have to keep going back to the main index page and scrolling down, looking at the dates of last posting.
I do use the 'View post since last vist' facility, but I still have to skip back and forth from that page to open a new post, which seems like a lot of mouse-work. Just wondered if there was an easier way that I'd not found yet. Maybe I should look into keyboard shortcuts and things.
As a Firefox user, you can open a link in a new tab with either the mouse-wheel / middle button (if you've got one), holding down Ctrl and left-clicking or right-clicking and choosing the option from the menu.
I generally go to "posts since last visit" (actually, that's what I've bookmarked so I can go straight there) and open the sections I'm interested in via a series of new tabs. Unlike some other forums I frequent, I definitely don't follow up 100% of the postings but, if someone really wants my opinion on a specific question, they can always send me a private message, so I don't lose too much sleep over it 8)
