Small green flat and 100 item living

Post: # 110955Post Amaranth »

After looking at photos of the 100 square foot/3mx3m square flats

I've been thinking about combining the idea of a 100 square foot efficiently designed studio flat or maybe more uni residence hall like -- living with a shared bathroom and a shared kitchen and then how a person might live in it with 100 items. From the pictures some people seem to be living with well chosen versatile items, and some have so few items that their lives look even more difficult than their neighbors. Others have so much stuff that it seems like it would make it hard to work and live in the space they do have.

In terms of green building I'd want to make not only the individual rooms but the whole building as green as possible including solar power and rain water collection. Some of the other flats in the same area have glass doors on the back wall and a balcony. In these flats I have not been able to find out if there are windows on the wall with the door.

Some upfront investment to make the space/furniture very versatile seems like it would pay off in long term frugal living.

It also might be that 100 square feet would be too challenging long term from a psychological standpoint. One recent design challenge on another site used 200 square feet with optional lofts and that was quite tricky to get everything into. And that was in a single family house so you could windows on all sides if you wanted to. But then whole families live in small caravans that are really well designed. So maybe its more of what you are used to and how well the space is laid out. And then choosing one's items to be multi use would help a lot too.

Any ideas for creating a greener situation and living with 100 items in 100/200?

A hammock or loft would help, the loft would let you use space under the bed for storage and/or sitting room. The hammock could be hung to one side during the day.

My biggest problem would be where to put my books, I'm something of a bibliophile.

That said, I'm in a similar situation, trying to figure out how to fit my life into a tiny yurt.
