Hi all. Just need to be publicly chuffed with myself really :)
We have (or rather, had) two 10' x 10' flower beds outside the kitchen. Very pretty and full of elderly rose bushes. I honestly thought there were about 50, turned out there were only 9 in each and loads of suckers!
Anyway, I gave them all a serious pruning, gave them a couple of weeks to recover, then dug them all up and put the in various places around the rest of the gardens (orchard to encourage pollenating insects, in the "pretty bit" of the garden, you know the drill). I then planted other pretty things, like peas, beans, nasturtiums and other salad stuff, along with a stack of herbs. Next year they'll be replaced with better organised raised beds, but for now they're going to provide me with a nice view that's also useful.
And the roses? Well, they've all put out new shoots and not one of them seems to be dying off.
Perfect!
Lynne
