Hi,

I can't remember where I read that tip about putting the strawberries in gutters, on the crop bars in the tunnel .... that could be years ago by now ..

the idea behind is that the strawberries will be hanging down instead of crawling on the ground ... so you could then put a gutter with just soil beside it ... and guide the shoots there so you end up propagating them easily .. just cut them from the mother plant when well established !

and of course the fruits are well away from slugs and all ... and it uses some "untouched" space otherwise .... and does save a lot of ground space ....

we have 30 odd plants in there, and it's like there were none ...

well let me tell you that so far it does the job perfectly .. I have dozens of big green strawberries hanging down the gutters ...

would anyone has any other tips in that range ? growing suspended things ?

I'm trying some suspended tomatoes too ...

some fiends have a lot os success with cherry toms in hanging baskets.

I tried upside down tomatoes a couple of years back. I still use one of the photos for my avatar on this site but the experiment as a whole wasn't a massive success - I think the tomatoes needed more soil for their roots and probably more protection from the sun as well.

However, the basil I grew at the other end of the hanging bottles turned out very well.

I doubt there would be enough soil in a gutter to support strawberries. I start my peas of in gutters in the tunnel though...

I would, as has been recommended with cherry toms, grow them in hanging baskets from the crop bars if I was allowed to. Sadly OH see's hanging baskets as the work of the Devil, strangely, along with fried tomatoes....

Now I didn't go that far as planting them upside down ... but I understood it was a failure ...

Will see how mine goes ...

as for the strawberries, loads of people were doubtfull untill they saw them .. I'll have to take a picture some days ...

I did space them out of 2 feet or so. so that the roots can go lengthwise ...

And will try some more cherry tomatoes too then ..
