Unfair or What?

Post: # 99128Post jondy »

This area say's Politics etc.
Is it unfair that around 20 to 25% of council rates are required to pay for the pensions of council workers? Is it unfair that public servants retire at age 60 with an inflation beating pension when most of the rest of the country work to 65 and beyond (68 mooted) without added pension? Is it unfair that public servants demand and usually get increased salaries in line with inflation on a regular basis?

Once upon a time, public sector workers were on fairly low wages but the pension and other benefits (time off, shorter hours etc) made up for that. I don't whether that's the case or not these days.

Figures released show the future cost of public-sector pensions has soared by £25 billion to £1 trillion. Each taxpayer will have to fork out more than £1,000 to provide gold-plated retirement deals for civil servants. The average pension fund used to buy an annuity last year was approximately £33,500 (pensions policy institute) this would buy a retirement income of £1,380 for a Male aged 65.
Public sector, civil servant 65 with 40 years service... £34,703, Teacher ditto, ...£28,518 Private sector... £7,675
