Friend of mine has a small press fiction magazine and as there is little advertising revenue and getting subscriptions is also hard he raises revenue by running competitions. If you could get donated prizes for comps then the entry fees could help fund the magazine.

I'd love to buy this.

Good idea, but you need to proceed with caution if you are to get into the realms of entry fees for competition - "free" draws are much easier, legally, to maintain and set up and alot more popular. Having said that, I know from experience that writers/fiction mag often do charge for entering your work etc... is that what you mean?

I think the breadth of products and services that could be targetted for advertising in a selfsufficientish mag is huge, more so than a writing/fiction mag, I may be totally out of place saying that but I can think of way more prospects for advertising just off the top of my head...
