I checked my over-wintering Broad Beans the other day,and I must say that I'm very pleased with their progress!
I've placed a rough and ready 'cloche' made of sheets of glass over them for protection (we've had a few frosts lately),but otherwise I've just left them to their own devices.
On the subject of Garlic and it's associated fumes- have you tried 'Green' Garlic.?
The bulbs when still in growth are really juicy.
The garlic leaves are really pungent-full of garlicky flavour-I sometimes chew a bit when the garlic is in full growth(phew!)
It would make a flavoursome addition to a salad (in small quantities!).

Just realised that a week ago I said "must go and check mine" - I've still not done it  .

Have never had green garlic; but I intend to grow garlic chives for salads and the like. I think that'll do me for next year (I am already planning about twice as much stuff than I'll ever be able to fit into my little plot).
