I've got a granite trough!

Post: # 96615Post Millymollymandy »

There's been this big rectangular lump of granite round the back of my house all the time we've been here - it gathers moss and that's about all it does. Now for a long time I've wanted it moved because since we got rid of the shrub that was behind it causing damp up the walls of the back of the house, this lump of rock has been sitting right in the way of my planned shady flower bed.

As I've had 3 blokes here working on the house (repointing it, finally finished and looking beautiful, lime mortar in place of mud  ) we asked them to help with shifting the rock.

They turned it over and guess what - it isn't a lump of pointless granite, it's a beautiful granite trough!!! It's been moved to where I wanted it, and all it needs are some drainage holes drilled in (and a wash) and I've got a beautiful, natural, matching the house stone planter! It really made my day!

(Will take photos later on this morning to show you).

Ooh, how exciting! Lucky you!
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?

Photos downloading at the moment! Will get them up shortly.

As it's in a really shady place and next to my proposed shady flower bed (always wanted one), I thought this year I'd buy some New Guinea Impatiens because they have lovely bright flowers and can take total shade.

You thought I'd be putting in veggies or herbs, didn't you?   Nope this space is for my other passion, the non-edibles!

Finally, here's the photos!

Trough has since been cleaned up a bit and had the drainage holes drilled in:

This is the north-east facing site where it and my shady flower bed will be, looking great after a pressure washing and repointing. Potting shed (boiler room) door and that's the bathroom window - I'll be able to pull back those curtains soon!

Given the proximity of that door, that trough is a natural home for night-scented stock if ever I saw one. Summer evening - sniff - better high than Mary Jane.

But I'm a woman, I don't live in my potting shed!

OK Annpan I will show you the rest of the photos I've just uploaded to a gallery, because I'm really proud of my beautiful house at the moment (even if we didn't do it ourselves!).

The same view but from further out showing all the back of the house:

Front of house views - it's quite incredible because the house has suddenly gone really blonde looking!

Wow... you have a gorgeous house, almost looks ecclesiastical.

I'd give everyone a laugh and put up the same photos but of my place... but my card reader has gone for a walk... so I can't get photos onto the 'puter.

Believe it or not it is just a peasant's cottage, the original house is just the living room with chimney and a hayloft above. All the rest of the house is a lot of 'Victorian' extensions (cowsheds and the like)!

I'd love to see piccies of your house - hope you find your card reader soon!
