Newbie from South Yorks

Post: # 94708Post Biscuit »

Hi all. I'm new to growing. In fact in the past I've been much better at neglecting and killing. I'm planning to try my hand at a few simple herbs and vegetables this year. I've gotta start quick too from what I've read.

Thought I might ask for a little help to start here. I was looking to clear space in my small garden and wondered what these three plants were before I did anything. I've no idea.

First is white and cottony - 2 pics

and this has been left in lots of places by the last tenants. Rooty with thin leaves. Picture's at a funny angle. I think it's related to some house plants?

I pretty much know what the rest is. Any help would be great. If you think I should ask again somewhere else, do say. Don't know my way around here yet, but looks like a great forum.

Hello biscuit! :hello2:

The pretty pink flower is a bergenia - common name elephants ears for obvious reasons! It's a hardy perennial, the leaves are much prized by flower arrangers.

I can't make out the 'cotton' flower pics!

Hello, Biscuit, and welcome!

And I have no idea about your plants, either...

Hello and welcome!

The first looks like fluffy seed heads on something - perhaps an annual? It looks like it ought to be cut back by now as that looks like last year's dead growth, but it isn't a big photo so can't see the base of the plant or its height. Is there any new green growth at the base?

The third is something like an iris - I can see the rhizomes and strappy leaves. You need to clear away all the dead vegetation from last year to allow the new leaves to come through.

Hiya Biscuit, from a West Yorkshire (relatively) Newb'!

When were the pics taken?

First pic - seedheads of Japanese Anemone

Second pic - Bergenia cordifolia

Third pic - can we see more detail?!

Cheers

Oh is that Jap Anemones? Great, cos I've just bought two, so now I know to leave the stems and dead flowers heads through the winter for some interesting fluffy bits in the dull winter months!

Thanks for that!

I think MMM has already done the third pic. I agree - it's an ornamental iris of some kind. But well done on the Japanese Anemone front, Gytrash.

Thanks for all the welcomes and help.

Amazing spotting that Anemone. I've looked on google and it looks right. Think it had white flowers before going to those seedheads. It was driving me crazy what they could be.

I'll try to get a better picture of that third one, as I'll be in the garden tomorrow. Everything is a total mess though. Reckon I'll save the the anemone and one of the elephant ears, but I might try to move those - might be iris ? - into pots. Would that work?

Oh, and the pics were taken the day I posted. So it's very recent.
