No, not the Dutch one. The Lincolnshire variety. We've lived in this house for a year now so, having worked out what we can and can't live with and what we really want from it, it's time to get cracking. We're on a one acre plot which is divided into three basic areas: the rather pretty garden (which is huge), a 60ft sq orchard (which contains 8 fruit trees, two of which are Golden Delicious apples - any takers?) and the areas around the driveway which include a petrol pump! There's definitely a well under there as it used to be the well for the entire village so we're investigating that.

In the meantime I'm turning flower beds in the orchard into fruit and veg beds (the rhubarb's already coming up well and the raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries are shooting away) and the two huge beds of roses outside the kitchen into herb beds. Sadly the previous owners loved their garden but didn't seem to realise that plants grow and that putting 24 rose bushes is a space 10ft x 10ft might make them tricky to look after.

So that's us. Once I've got the planting up and running, I'll look into some rescued battery hens (and some meat birds) and try to work out whether we've got space for a couple of sheep. At least it will save on fuel costs for the lawnmower!

Hello and welcome! We had the same thing with roses here! They were crammed in, all spindly and pathetic. Gave half of them away and replanted the rest and they are now enormous and beautiful.

Thanks for the welcome. And no worries about the reply from MKG. I'm sure that, in the words of the great Nanny Ogg, he's just an old softy really.

I'm giving away half my roses and hopefully moving most of the rest to the orchard. I figure if I put them in among the fruit and veg they'll do two things. Firstly they'll attract pollenating insects and secondly, any aphids will be attracted to them and hopefully it'll keep them off the food crops. Nice theory anyway.
