Plastic troughs.

Post: # 93911Post SarahJane »

I have come into possesion of half a dozen plastic troughs and am going to put flowers in a couple to add some colour but would like to grow some veggies in the others.

I was thinking of transplanting my garlic into one.

For the others I thought maybe,

Carrots ( I thought that I would try the little round ones)
Beetroot ( I have just planted the seeds in trays)
Do you think that these two would grow ok in troughs? And what else do you suggest?

Herbs always do well; the round carrots and beetroot should be OK, too - might not get as large as in a deep bed. Lettuce is another option - there are so many varieties that the troughs could look quite ornamental, too!

Yep - they should do - not so very deep rooting. But get them planted soon, they do better if they get a bit of cold feet...

I've got some troughs I made from left over decking wood lined with polythene and I've got strawberries in them (x4 in each 2 foot long trough). They seem to be quite happy in there.
I've also planted some "Salad leaves" seeds in a spare one, and they're coming on strong too.
