The way they're written implies:
A bath seat for a yellow baby
A basket for a small blue dog
A handbag for a large black woman

not on freecycle, but a while ago my colleague told me she had put an advert in a window for a singer sewing machine. We were both costumiers and she had an interest in historical machines. The ad? "Wanted - Old Black Singers"
Was she suprised when she picked up the phone to bass tones?
You decide...

Oh, English is wonderful! I don't think you can get quite these misunderstandings in any other language... German is far too boring in that respect. They'd just stick two words together and make one to avoid misinterpretation.

Someone I know works at the local paper, and this woman phoned in an advert, she was trying to sell.. a box of puppies.

When I first started to work for Environmental Health I was shocked to read a report from one of the officers that contained the phrase "...and laid on a bed of well rammed hardcore....."
I discovered later that I referred to the method of applying a damp proof course!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

ScotAds, our local ad sheet, had one last year. Someone wanted a "hearty black cock"!! If it hadn't been in the poultry section...
