Demijohn

Post: # 88728Post Sky »

Having real problems finding any in NZ to enable me to have a go at making our own wine.
They don't seem really common here, and new ones are very expensive. I've been asking folk to look out for us some on their rounds of the garage sales on a wk end but no luck yet.

Can I make wine in any other container, I even though of using a nappy bucket with a hole cut in the lid for the bung and air lock, but you can't see through a nappy bucket at what's going on inside :?

Well I never, I just thought I'd do a quick google image search (don't know why I didn't think to do that before) and they call some demijohns here Carboys?

odd.

I make my own demijohns. I get my vinegar in big 5l plastic bottles. I make a hole int he top of the plastic lid and push in an airlock. Works a treat and is much, much cheaper.

Thanks for the idea, I've seen containers being sold on Trade me that sound like that, been used to import syrup from Asia I think. They're only $8 dollars so think will go bid on some.

Hi Sky,

I make all my wine and beer in plastic barrells. Check out payless plastics, they have 40 pint (23 liter) and 50 liter barrels with lids. Or support your local homebrewshop. Not sure where you live in Aotearoa but Hauraki Homebrew in Takapuna is the best shop in the greater Auckland area!

Cheers

Dunno how earth friendly it is though to be buying new plastic stuff even though I suppose I will be using it for a very, very long time hopefully, will still have a look on Trademe for recycled stuff too :?

Sorry another thing just came to mind. I once got free (as in "no money") plastic buckets with lid which take around 25 liters. Become a member on Freecycle! Actually everybody should be on there. This is the international webpage: http://www.freecycle.org, here is the list of countries: http://www.freecycle.org/group//?noautodetect=1 and this is the New Zealand list: http://www.freecycle.org/group/NZ/New%20Zealand. Only rule is:it has to be free. You can also mail a "WANTED:..." mail to this list!

Cheers

I read this and couldn't help but picture my father-in-law's place at harvest time: he has a 1000 liter container he fills with grape juice to be turned into wine.

You don't need to - in Germany we used green bottles in plastic basket type thingies... You see what's going on at the top!

Sky,

If you are in Christchurch why not go to the Supershed on Pages Road and see if they have anything you could use there.

In case you don't know that is that place that anything taken to the tip but is usable gets sold for a small price. You can get all sorts of stuff, books, crockery, furniture, electrical bits. I bought a small desk there and hubby likes to go to buy bits and bobs for making things.

I have been there but will go again, see what they have.
Did you find their price depended on your accent .. it did last time we visited.
But I'm game and will try again ..
