Don't let us have them on ours unfoutenately.

My grandad used to keep pigs and chickens on his but that was 40 odd years ago. I suppose the older more established allotments that have been around for a long time are likely to let you.

If it is a private allotment or run by a private allotment society, they can stipulate whatever rules they (or the members) want. As you say, it is only council owned allotments that must allow you to keep poultry & rabbits.[/quote]

Private allotments are usually run on the land owned by the council (but not always). Even as a private association, you would not be able to do things your council doesn't allow on it's land.

If enough of your members want to allow certain livestock AND the local council rules allow that particular type then you can do it.

Private assoc or not, unless you own the land you are using then you are tenants and subject to your landlords rules.

We have resident foxes on our site (they have relinquished their hole on our plot) so although the rules are that "poultry & rabbits can be kept if the committee agrees" there's really no point. Not giving the foxes a captive meal means they keep down the wild rabbits & rats that could otherwise be a real problem.

We can keep chicken on our but only 24 per plot
1 person on our sit has got goats and I've heard he would like to keep pigs. but so far he has not had much luck with the local council.
pre war and I think up to the late 50s early 60s I think we could keep them. So why not now I ask
I would love to have a pair of pigs aswell.

We have to get everything arranged ie chicken house and run etc, and then call the council to come and approve it. If they do, chickens are fine, if not.. your left with a chicken house and run left empty!!!
I'm still mulling it over! If they say no, I could have the chooks in the garden but need to make sure they would be totally safe before going ahead. :?

Animals on allotments

Post: # 90347Post becks77 »

Hi,
Only slugs allowed here in East Sussex too, however I have choks at home in the back garden. And a fellow allotmenter is trying very hard to get a beehive allowed, seems very sensible to me.
