2nd time lucky for onions...

Post: # 87297Post mew »

Just about the plant my onion sets where my carrots were last year.

I havent manured or added anything to it as I understand they dont like fresh muck.

Am I simply best putting the sets straight in as Ive read in a couple of lottie books to add a general fertilizer before planting them?

Just wondered what everyone else did?

Thanks

Last year I planted them after potatoes, and they had had a lot of muck. But I didn't add any for the onions... Wouldn't use and "artificial" fertiliser anyway! If you are afraid the ground may not be fertile enough, maybe use a bit of well rotted compost; that's not quite as strong as muck.

I put them in the same part of my rotation as carrots, as they need similar conditions; the fertility will probably be ok this year provided it's had some muck within the last 3 years.
