Good point about using spices bought as foodstuff for getting your seeds - a lot cheaper than buying them as seeds. I have successfully grown coriander and fennel from spices bought from the kitchen, though the caraway did not germinate. Also onions can be grown from Kalonji - (used in Indian cookery)
Opinionated but harmless

What a great idea!!! :king: we are having a family challenge! Myself and 5yr old daughter vs Partner and 3yr old daughter!!! The winners will recieve a 3 course dinner cooked by the other team!
We will be growing...
tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, round carrots, pumpkins, corn on the cob, potatoes, spring onions, beetroot and strawberies! All left over from last year... He was quite rude about me storing the left over seeds last year. Something about being 'a waste of time' as I remember it! He'll eat his words now! :tongue10: I haven't spent a penny yet! Also very cheeckely have 'aquired' a couple of left over seed potatoes from the large bag he bought for our normal allotment! ( he won't miss them!)

Does anyone else have any good ideas on suitable FREE source for our plants, then I could spend my £1 on some chocolate! (I will need lots of stamina!)

Claire :flower:

Well here are a few things I am growing at the moment that haven't cost anything

carrots - I sent off for a seed catalogue, they were out of stock so sent me a free packet of seeds instead

Buttercup squash - bought one to eat, saved the seeds
ditto for marrow, and pumpkin

fennel and dill from seeds in the storecupboard, I now have absolutely loads of dill seeds

parsley (that doesn't realy count it grows almost like a weed here, I don't pull it out as it grows better than the grass does)

avacado - from a seed

currants from cuttings given (ok still small)

I have also just collected the seed from a pot of purple beet leaves I bought and forgot about, enough to sow loads for next year

potatoes - you can guarentee if you chuck he green or the slightly off ones on the compost heep you will definitely have some come up the following year

Tomatoes, the ones I buy seeds for never do any well, but the ones from the compost in the heap come up great.

jerusalem artichokes - sent from a friend who had a glut

so i guess even not trying, I am growing a fair bit for nothing.

It sounds like a really fun thing to try, and a good way to start some creative ideas flowing. I bet I could grow a fair bit for a quid  and I like the idea of the seed box - if only postage wasn't so expensive in the UK now....

What sort of luck are you having finding seeds?

Anyone settled on their set of seeds to use for this?

One thing I've gotten questions about is whether people are limited to just £1 for their whole garden. You could do that if you like, but more likely people can just keep up with where their £1 of seeds/tubers are planted and what those produce.
