I made some curtains ...

Post: # 8286Post flowers-v-spuds »

I needed some curtains for my kitchen so I went to a charity shop a- looking, couldn't find any suitable, but i did find a gingahm double quilt cover and 2 pillowcases.

I managed to get a pair of curtains, 2 pelmets and 2 cafe curtains made, ties backs and some bags for candles, a cover for my ironing board (that never gets used  )and still got quite a bit of material left to make more bags and shelf trims - all for 2.40.
Looks good too!

Nice one. I could do with some curtains in my bedroom too

Now that's what I call frugal!!

I would love to do that, but unfortunately the sewing machine is knackered! Also I am quite rubbish at this kind of creative stuff. (New Year's Resolution? This could be it!)

I stitched them by hand  took bloomin ages! Luckily only narrow windows though

Have always wanted to have a go at patchwork so looking about for stuff to use for bedroom as a throwover, or if I get fed up - cat blankets

Not bad going... I just love charity chops. Have to take some stuff there myself soon - I'm trying to sort out some of the useless presents I got over the last few years. I bought two crystal sherry glasses some time ago - not that I really needed them, but they were only 50p, still with their original sticker on them - they'll do as a nice present for somebody who drinks that stuff!

Anyway, I'd like to point out that I now have blinds in my living room... I invested in proper black-out blinds, and they do make a difference, warmth-wise. Will fix the curtains on top of that - erh, when I get round to it. Sometime this year. One of my resolutions...

I took a pic. they are that not impressive really, but they do the job and were cheap (which is the main thing  )

Flowers - they are lovely!
Well done you, especially for sewing them by hand. I haven't done anything like this for years as I don't have the time now ( how sad is that!!)
But I would love to get hold of a sewing machine, I have huge plans for making my own clothes.
That's it I've decided!!
I'm gonna treat myself to a sewing machine!

ta hedgewith

Have you seen those hand sewing machines? I had one years ago but couldn't work out how to use it but I've heard they are quite good.
i would love to make my own clothes too but unless it was for something like a special occasion I think it's cheaper to buy 2nd hand.

(I couldn't sign in again)

I've bought clothes from charity shops and turned them in to other clothes, I'll see something that I like the pattern of but not the design.
I have seen adverts for the hand sewing machines but not used one before.

Great curtains. you could try and fing a sewing machine at a charity shop.

for sewing clothes if you can get hold of the quick sew books they have multiple patterns and designs - cheaper than buying individual patterns.

I've found that if you can get end of season material it is a lot cheaper just need to plan ahead a little. Some of the op shops here are starting to get their prices up so I weigh up the cost of shopping around when buying clothes. If I can find ready made clothes cheaper than I can make them I tend to buy them.

This thread inspired me to plead for a sewing machine on Freecycle, and I have been offered 2!!! (Obviously I will only take one!!)

I am going to collect it at the weekend.
