Baby Carrier

it took me a day of finding various tutorials online, another day to preshrink all the material and work out my own way of doing things, then 3.5 hours of solid sewing to make this thing. I am so proud.

soph is incredibly happy in it... well, she wasnt happy to have pics but she was happy in the carrier!!!

I was so sursprised at how comfortable it is to wear. I've not got the strap tying quite right yet but that will just take practice. also, Basildon isn't a very open minded town and I did get quite a few wierd looks... I did get some really nice comments too though and it's nice to finally have people speak rather than just look at the floor and walk very fast. I want to go into southend with it and stand there like bait for textile students!!!

Soph and I are giving it a full test tomorrow and going to my mum's house by train. a long bus journey and 2 trains- no having to worry about missing my second train 'cos the lifts at shenfield are slow, no hving to worry about keeping soph entertained in a buggy she can't see anything out of 'cos she's so low down and no buying too much stuff 'cos I can only bring home what I can carry....woohoo!

Also, my friend was so impressed she asked me to come up with a way to make a baby sling for her baby.... ok so her baby is a slightly mental dog but each to their own!!

Is she no to heavy to carry? I am thanking heavens that E can walk now because it co-incided with a bit of a weight gain and I am soo glad she isn't stuck to my hip all day anymore.

Your Soph looks taller and skinnier than my chubby monkey... still I'd be willing to give it a try.

my fluff is around the 2st mark. I was totally amazed at how comfortable this thing is. she's not too bad to carry, but I'm sure that's 'cos I used two different tutes to create my own- one tute with narrow but padded straps, one tute with the wider straps. I also changed the body piece 'cos all the other tutorials said you needed 2 bits of outer and 1 bit of inner sturdier fabric... I thought to myself, "why do more sewing?" and went for a large rectangle.

oh, and the size I made can fit anything from newborn upwards with some creative tying of the straps.

That wonderful ... dont forget you can prolly carry her at the front when shes not well and want to be cuddles all the time.
I did a similar thing years ago when mine were tiny... using a wide fabric
pleatning the end and stitching them to a narrow fabric the whole thing slipped over my head and baby went in. I looked a little like a hammock a bit like the pouch sling here ... sorry about the link size

Re: easy sling for your mate

I just made a non-adjustable sling it was really easy:

- measure across body from shoulder to opposite hip. double and add 6 inches.

- cut a piece of material 22 inches wide x the length above.

- hem the long sides that will run across your body.

- fold in half with right sides together so that non-hemmed sides are lined up together (I hope that is clear)

- hem this on a slight curve (a mona lisa smile rather than a big cheesy grin), roughly so that the hem on each side rises to 2 1/2 inches above the rough edge. I sewed mine with a sort of triple stitch setting, as this is the bit carrying the weight.

- the instructions were then to make a french seam, but I didn´t bother, if you wanted to you could overlock it. I don´t have an overlock so I have zig-zagged it for now and plan to cover the exposed seam with another strip of fabric or ribbon.

I actually used two thicknesses of fabric so that it is lined with a different colour. I also made a detachable padded epilette to bring the fabric together at the shoulder.

Top tip: as its non-adjustable I made a rough version with an ol sheet first to make sure the fit was right.

Clara: oh my! I'm sure sophie's first sling was like that. I never thought to copy the pattern for that...



I want to have a look in charity shops for a big coat to cut a head hole out of the back for squidge... but I'm sure James would refuse to go out with me dressed in it lol!!! I was thinking maybe a big poncho?!
