I see the cod farm on Shetland is in receivership, I was quite surprised about that, i thought it would be a success, although i was a bit shocked at the price per kilo, but still i would have thought people would have gone for it. Over 100 lost jobs, which is alot for Shetland
When the rain falls it doesn't fall on one mans house.
It's not really surprising as it's down to modern business practices.
A lot of capital had been sunk into the business, but as the cod stock takes some time to mature, the business wasn't generating a return quick enough to repay the capital, much less reinvest more.
Oh, and don't make the mistake of thinking it was an ecologically sustainable business - the cod stock are fed with wild herring and mackerel. Okay, it's offcuts, but you still need a lot of wild fish to be caught to produce one farmed one.
