I've made lasting friends wherever we've moved through the WI. Still keep in touch and visit (once in a while) after many years and 100s of miles. Takes a conscious effort not to drift until you only exchange Christmas cards.
justfortheloveofit.org puts you in touch with other 'like minded people' in you area (within 10 miles)
And they have a tool lending spot for tomr and land available free spots too

It is a problem, for lots of people. Human beings are, as they say, social animals. Just because you (or I, or we) don't agree with or want to live in the same way as 90% of them out there, doesn't mean we don't need a bit of company sometimes. The internet is very useful, but not quite the same as meeting, chatting etc with people who's company you enjoy.
I agree that it can be really difficult to meet new people who you can connect with.
I have lived in lots of different places since uni and I have found the best thing to do is be yourself - if people are interested in you they will accpect you no matter what their outlook is in life.
Friendships do take time and with added pressures of work and family I found that they can be hard to keep up.
I have been in my town for 3 years now and its getting better all the time. Its good to keep yourself busy- don't give up with the evening/dance/social classes you never know who you might meet.

I was very lonely for a long time here in rural France with only a Bonjour or 2 at the school gates but I refused to let it stay that way. I continued inviting the kids round to play with my son and making the effort with certain, smiley people and we have at last (3 years on!) been rewarded with dinner at a French families house this weekend and my son has more birthday invites and play-overs than any other child in the school!
